Gas South District

6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097

Construction and renovation

Netflix recently wrapped up filming a live show on stage at Gas South District. Just another day in the life of what is fast becoming metro Atlanta’s premier entertainment complex. Situated near the heart of Gwinnett County, leaders say Gas South District is the largest publicprivate development that has ever taken place in the county with around half a billion dollars already invested in the campus at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.

“Gas South District in its various originations, whether as Infinite Energy Center or Gwinnett Arena has always been a centralized gathering spot for all of Gwinnett County as it pertains to public gatherings, entertainment and professional sports,” Stan Hall said. Hall is CEO of the Gwinnett Convention & Visitors Bureau, which oversees operations at Gas South District. He said the goal is to make the campus feel like Main Street Gwinnett with “high level, high quality entertainment, conventions, work, live, play all going to be right here within the confines of Gas South District.” Renovations and additions continue with more plans on the drawing board for Gas South District’s 118-acre site.

Some of the work is expected to be completed by December, including the convention center, which had operated with the same square footage for 15 years. “Not only are we updating that space we’ve always depended on, but it’s completely renovated,” Hall said. “Every piece of that convention center is updated and upgraded aesthetically to match the new space we opened in November of last year.” When it opens in December, the convention space will almost double its square footage. “That’s huge for us.” Hall said, adding conventions needing such a large space have contacted them in the past, but Gas South could not accommodate what they needed. “Those people we’ve been talking to for years are now actually talking to us about dates,” he said. “It’s really exciting to bring them in.”

Hall said the $150 million Westin hotel being built adjacent to the convention center will also be a “game changer” as it adds another 20,000 square feet of meeting room space. The full-service hotel will have a rooftop bar, room service and restaurant and is expected to open in December 2023. Gas South District is adding an outdoor terrace where visitors can walk out of the double doors in the grand ballroom onto a terrace overlooking the lake in front of the convention center. It will be big enough to host large-scale receptions, cocktail parties and other events. A four-acre green space project outside the arena entrance is about to be completed as a public gathering space and site to host outdoor concerts, festivals and seasonal celebrations, Hall said, adding there will also be space for food trucks. He said it will all be similar to a city’s town green, but located on the Gas South District campus.

Another major change under way is re-doing the performing arts center. “We have the largest theater in the county with a 708 seating capacity,” he said. “...We’re only one of two or three in the entire Atlanta area with a stage presence that could bring in an Off Broadway production. Fox is one, Cobb Energy is another and I don’t think there is another that could accommodate.” Gas South District has been the site of numerous film projects with Netflix recently filming a live show featuring comedian Jason Banks. Hall said Gas South District is in the research stage of creating its own theater company that will “grow into something that has a true theater presence in the Atlanta area.”

Also, a new medical building is expected to break ground on the property in 2023, which Hall says will add to the momentum for the Gas South District’s mixed-use project currently being discussed with a developer.
